An unusual episode occurred
when the Spanish fleet was sailing near the town of Enkhuizen during the
winter of 1573. The weather turned very cold and the Zuider Zee froze.
The Spanish ships were caught in the ice. The Nederlanders waited until
the ice was thick enough, and then sent out horsemen to capture the Spanish
ships. This was probably the only sea battle in history won on horseback.
