McLaren fastest at Jerez

The McLaren-Mercedes team in their adapted Bridgestone 1997 car was the fastest team at Jerez so far for the off-season. The McLaren team's, David Coulthard set the fastest time on Friday with a 1:24:24, with team mate Mika Hakkinen following him on 1:24:54.

The Williams Formula One team spent the week testing their narrow track. Williams's Montoya, Villeneuve and Frentzen took turns driving. The fastest time for the team was set by their new test driver, Montoya, with a time of 1:24:85.

Meanwhile, Eddie Irvine set his fastest lap time of 1:24:90 on Thursday with the Ferrari F310B.

Ferrari's Jerez testing ends

At 6pm, Friday, Ferrari's Eddie Irvine completed his last test session at Jerez for the week. He completed an impressive number of laps and accumulated usefull data on the different types of tyres that will be used by the Ferrari team this year.

Irvine completed a total of 89 laps on Friday with the F310B, chassis number 179, and posted a best lap time of 1:25:41s.

While testing at Jerez has ended for the team, they will continue testing at Fiorano with Nicola Larini on Saturday and Sonday. The aim of the test sessions on Saturday and Sunday is to continue with the development work of the F300.

Better luck for Irvine.

Ferrari's Eddie Irvine was in action at Jerez in Spain on Thursday. The Irish driver tested the 1998 spec Goodyear tyres.

Irvine set a fastest time of 1:24.90 seconds and completed 67 laps on Thursday. Ferrari's test session will end on Friday at Jerez.

McLaren team satisfied with their test session

The McLaren-Mercedes Formula One team also tested at Jerez this week with the new grooved Bridgestone tyres on their 1997 MP4/12.

Both David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen posted a best time of 1m 25.8s Wednesday. They continued on Thursday and were only 0.01s apart in the morning with times of 1m 24.94s and 1m 24.95s respectively for second and third fastest times behind Ferrari's, Eddie Irvine.

Both drivers were scheduled for further testing in the afternoon with longer runs and heavier feul loads. They were scheduled to complete their testing on Friday.

Williams's test sesions at Jerez

Juan Pablo Montoya, the Williams team's new test driver began testing on Monday at the wheel of a FW19 with grooved Goodyear tyres. Montoya continued testing on Tuesday after after Heinz-Harald Frentzen had to stop testing on Monday because of a flu attack.

Villeneuve joined the Colombian on Tuesday for further testing in the absence of Frentzen. Frentzen reappeared on Wednesday morning and completed some good laps with a best time of 1:26:3s after being forced to stop after lunchtime because he was still not feeling well.

Viileneuve posted a best time on Wednesday, when weather conditions finally improved, of 1:26:4s in a 1997 specification car on grooved tyres and a time of 1:27:89s in the narrow track 1998 test car.

Montoya's best time was 1:24:9s on Wednesday in a 1997 car with grooved tyres. This time is 3.8s away from the 1997 european Grand Prix pole time.

Wet third day of testing for Ferrari

Location : Jerez, Spain

Eddie Irvine had a sunny day at Jerez in Spain. He completed 75 laps with a F 310 B and managed a fastest time of 1:25.71 seconds. Irvine continued with the scheduled tyre test, trying different Goodyear compounds.

Williams and McLaren having problems during testing

The Williams and McLaren-Mercedes Formula One teams seems to be having problems in the early stages of their testing.

According to sources, Jacques Villeneuve was forced to walk back to the pits after the failure of the new gearbox.

The McLaren-Mercedes team lost their second Mercedes engine within the last two days, according to reports.

Bad weather hamper Ferrari's second test

Location : Jerez, Spain.

It was a wet test session for Eddie Irvine at Jerez in Spain on Monday. He completed a total of 85 laps. He set a fastest time 1:28.38 seconds on the 1998 spec tyres. He also tested the 1997 spec tyres and managed to set a fastest time of 1:25.38 seconds.

Irvine tested four different types of tyres on Tuesday. He set a fastest time of 1:26.97 seconds during his 91 laps for the day. The weather conditions on Tuesday was slightly better allowing Irvine to set times in the dry.

Formula One test

Location: Jerez, Spain.

Formula One observers belief that the 1998 season will be the most exciting in years. The FIA made several changes to the rules in an effort to make the sport more competitive.

The test session will start on Monday and will continue until Friday.

Most of the Formula One teams should be at the test session.
