1982-1988

Karting - 3 times Scottish Champion, twice winner of the Junior Scottish Open Championship and Junior British Super 1 Championship, winner of the Senior Scottish Open Championship.

1989

Competed in Junior FF 1600 racing, winner of both Junior FF1600 Championships. Finished 3rd in the Brands Hatch Formula Ford Festival. Competed and impressed in selected senior races.

1990

Joins Paul Stewart Racing (PSR) in the GM Lotus team. Competed in British Vauxhall Lotus Challenge and GM Lotus Euroseries. Won the McLaren Autosport Young Driver of the Year Award. Tested the McLaren-Honda MP4/5 Formula One car.

1991

Runner-up in British F3 Championship, with 5 wins (more than any other driver in the Championship). Winner of the European Marlboro Masters of Formula 3 and the Macau Grand Prix.

1992

Competed in Formula 3000 racing with PSR.

1993

Finished 3rd in the Formula 3000 Championship with PSR. Winner of the GT Class at the Le Mans 24 Hour Race with Jaguar.

Formula One

1992

Tested with the Benetton-Ford Formula One team.

1994

Test driver for the Williams-Renault Formula One team. Promoted to race driver after Ayrton Senna's fatal accident at Imola. Scored14 pts, finished 8th in the Drivers' Championship. Voted Scottish Sports Personality of the Year and ITV Young Sports Personality of the Year.

1995

Drove for Williams-Renault. Finished1st in Portugal. Scored 49 pts. Finished 3rd in the Drivers Championship, with 7 podium finishes and 5 pole positions.

1996

Drove for McLaren-Mercedes. Finished 2nd in Monaco and 3rd in Europe. Scored 18 points. Finished 7th in Drivers Championship with 2 podium finishes.

1997

Drove for McLaren-Mercedes. Finished 1st in Australia and Italy, and 2nd in Austria and Spain. Scored 36 points Finished 4th in the Driver's World Championship with 4 podium finishes.
