 WebScan
Week
Banim

Microsoft WebscanWebScan is a short series of interesting pointers about life in cyberspace.  Browsers, e-mail, irc-chat and all things pertaining to the Internet, are explained in short snippets to make the web less intimidating for the not so techno literate...

WebScan is presented by 'Beyond on 3's coolest young presenter, Isaac Chokwe.  This week, Isaac's mentor is Taun Masterson from Microsoft South Africa.

Taun can be reached at:
E-mail:
taunm@microsoft.com

Isaac and Taun This week, Isaac and Taun take a look at adding sites to your Favourites List in Internet Explorer 4.

INTERNET EXPLORER 4'S FAVOURITES FEATURE

By using the History feature of Internet Explorer 4 you can view and access all the sites that you've been to which are listed in dated order.

Internet Explorer 4's Favourites feature allows you to mark specific sites that you might want to return to later.

WebScan02 Ep13To add a site to your Favourites folder, select Favourites, and click on Add to Favourites. You can choose from a number of options and get updated every time the page changes by subscribing.  You can also download the page for offline viewing, or simply mark this page as a page that you'd like to come back to.

INTERNET EXPLORER 4'S HISTORY FEATURE

Everyone should be familiar with their Favourites, where you can store sites and click on them to go directly through to the site.

WebScan Ep12bBut if you click on the History button in Internet Explorer 4, it splits your browser screen into two frames and in the left frame, it gives you a rundown of every site you've been surfing.

You will be able to see every site that you visited today, yesterday, and in the last couple of weeks.  By clicking on a particular week it displays a number of sites, and by clicking on any one you will be taken right there.

NETSHOW"S STREAMING MEDIA SERVICES

Internet Explorer 4.0 allows you to access streaming audio and video with NetShow's streaming media services. To access Netshow, go to Microsoft's http://microsoft.com/ntserver/netshow/ and click on Solutions and Demo. webscanEp11bFrom the Select a Product menu select Netshow , and click on Go. It will automatically adjust to the bandwidth you have available, and start to download. Once the download is complete, the Netshow player will appear with controls to play your audio of choice. A video presentation of an hour an a half takes roughly thirteen seconds to form a buffer before it starts playing. You can still view streaming video on a slower link but the buffer could take anything from between two and four minutes to form.

Join us next week, when we look at using Internet Explorer 4.0 to find out exactly where people have been surfing on the Internet.

SEARCH ENGINE TIPS

We have learnt how to use various search engines to search for single words, but what if you're looking to search for something more complicated?

webscanEp09bTake the game "Age of Empires" for example.  You want to find out about the game, and you also want some hints on how to play a winning game. Go to the search page at Microsoft.com, and click on the "Search" button which provides you with a couple of different mechanisms for searching. What is particularly useful is the Boolean search. This allows you to use the two keywords - "AND" and "OR" to perform a search.

Now, back to our example. To find everything with "Age", "Empires" and "Hints", enter the words. It will then return everything with all three of those words in it. You can also do more complicated searches like,  "Age" AND "Empires" OR "Hints". If there's anything with "Hints" then it will return that as well. If you're looking for a complex idea that is slightly ambiguous, and you would like to take out that ambiguity, you could also use "NOT".

So it really allows you to customise your search for all sorts of complicated subjects, and limit your search to not include certain things. It's really that simple.

INTERNET EXPLORER 4 RATING SYSTEMS

webscanEp08bInternet Explorer 4 provides functionality which allows parents to filter what is available on the Internet. It allows you to create categories of content to filter out, for instance bad language, nudity, sex or violence,  or certain political content. Third party rating systems, provided by organisations which categorises the Internet content, can also be accessed - it's just a matter of importing a file which will allows you to filter that specific content. So Internet Explorer 4 really provides you with a whole range  of tools to control what is accessible to your kids.

Simply enable the rating system in the Content tab in the Internet options. It is password protected so you can prevent your kids from accessing it.

TEXT MESSAGE FOR CELL PHONE

SMS stands for Short Message Service - allowing you to send a text message to the screen of a cell phone.

Start by accessing the MTN Website - http://www.mtn.co.za

Click on the "SEND SMS" button. Now enter the necessary details - the cell number, network and message and click on "SEND MESSAGE"

Your text message will now appear on the targeted cell phone.

webscanEp07bCOOKIES

"Cookies" are something that a web server sends to you or your web browser that highlight certain aspects of you - like your name or your reading preference for example.

The problem with "cookies" is that they impinge on one's privacy. Anyone can use a "cookie" to see where you are travelling across the Internet

To turn off this option, follow these instructions:
In Internet Explorer, open " Internet Options" and select "Advanced".
Next, select "Security" and choose "Disable all Cookie Use" to stop everybody from sending you a "cookie"
"Prompt before Accepting Cookies" allows one to moderate who sends and receives cookies from you.

EMAIL

E-mail is an automatic service when one hooks up to an Internet Service Provider. This allows you to send and receive mail in cyberspace almost immediately. No more long queues at the Post Office!! Everybody gets their own unique address, for example: lungis@iafrica.com

webscanEp06To send a letter via e-mail, begin by clicking on the MAIL icon and then on NEW MESSAGE.

At the prompt next to  "TO" - type the recipient's address. In the space next to "SUBJECT" - type the subject of your letter - for example " A quick note to say Hi!". Now hit the send button at the top of the page and your letter will arrive

SEARCH ENGINES

Altavista_logo

This week, Lungi and Isaac get to know the ins and outs of using an Internet Search Engine.

Search Engine such as Alta Vista, Lycos, Info-Seek, HotBot, Yahoo or Ananzi help web surfers to find information on the web.

By typing in the subject or word and hitting the 'Search' button, the search engine goes out and accesses all documents on the Internet with that word or string of words, and brings back the results.

For example: If you type in the word, MANDELA, Ananzi, the South African Search Engine, comes up with 768 different occurrences of 'Mandela' on South African sites on the web.

In Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4, to find a selection of search engines, simply click on the 'Search' button.

BROWSERS

Lately, everyone has been talking about getting on the Internet, getting onto cyberspace, getting connected, but unfortunately some of us are still being left behind.

This week, Isaac and Lungi learn how to use a browser to visit Computicket online http://www.computicket.com and find out how you can book a ticket from the comfort of your own home - without the hassle of standing in queues.

For a first time Internet user it will be helpful to access the built in HELP Index to learn more about Internet Explorer.

Or, to learn more about the browser, you can visit http://www.microsoft.com/ie

And visit Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.co.za
