COMPOSITION:
Each 3,5 g ointment contains 350 mg sulphacetamide sodium.
PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION:
A 15.1 Ophthalmic preparations with antibiotics and/or sulphonamides.
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION :
Sulphacetamide sodium is used extensively in the management of ophthalmic infections susceptible to sulphonamides. Its use in chronic and acute conjunctivitis is well established. Sulphacetamide has a similar structure to p-aminobenzoic acid and interferes with the synthesis of nucleic acid in sensitive micro-organisms. Its action is primarily bacteriostatic and broad spectrum.
INDICATIONS:
Infection of the eye and eye socket, sties and trachoma.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS:
Sulphacetamide eye ointment should not be applied to penetrating wounds of the cornea. Persons who have shown hypersensitivity to sulphonamides.
Concurrent administration with preparations containing silver salts.
DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
Squeeze a small quantity into the inner corner of the infected eye.
Repeat three times daily.
SIDE-EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS:
Sensitivity reactions may include various types of skin rash and erythema, exfoliative dermatitis and photosensitivity.
Local application to the eye may cause burning or stinging.
IDENTIFICATION:
Smooth, off-white to pale yellow ointment.
PRESENTATION:
Tubes of 3,5 g.
STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS:
Store below 25°C in airtight containers. Protect from light. Protect from freezing.
